Jacqueline Kennedy's Wedding Cake

Jaqueline Kennedy and JFK Wedding CakeCurious to know what the wedding cake looked like at the wedding of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy?

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy married JFK, on September 12, 1953 at Hammersmith Farm, Newport, Rhode Island.

He would go on to become one of the most beloved, charismatic and respected American presidents just a few years later.

Their wedding cake was a classic, traditional 5-tier cake. The tiers sat directly one top of one another, no pillars or separators between them.

The cake was decorated in all-white icing, with an elegant swirl design pattern, also of white icing. The base of the cake was encircled with a floral garland and greenery, and in keeping with Jackie's famous taste for classic elegance, the cake topper consisted of a cluster of fresh flowers - ivory roses accented with a little bit of greenery.

We've selected a similarly styled cake, shown above, from our wedding cake gallery to show you a similar idea with a contemporary spin. This cake, below, is also an all white cake, embellished with fresh flowers. In this case the flowers, stargazer lilies, spiral over the tiers, beginning at the top of the cake where a couple of Stargazers serve as the cake topper. This cake features a similar swirl pattern to that on the Kennedy wedding cake.

While the Kennedy wedding cake featured 5 tiers, this comparable consists of just 3 tiers, however, each tier on this cake is slightly taller in height than the tiers on the Kennedy's wedding cake. And, being a taller cake, it stands to reason that the diameter of the bottom tier is also larger on the Kennedy's cake than it is on the comparison.

It gives you a very good idea of the type of variations you can make on the same overall classic design.

As you can see, a cake such as this will never be out of style. Its as elegant today as it was in 1953 and will still be a classic beauty 50 years from now. This is classic elegance at its very best.

If you aspire to a wedding cake fit for American Royalty as the Kennedy's have so often been called, a classically styled cake like this might be the wedding cake for you.
